BANGALORE: Nirbhay, the subsonic cruise missile, will be flight-tested in February.
This was revealed by VK Saraswat, scientific adviser to the defence minister, at a briefing on Aero India 2013.
The six-metre-long missile that weighs a tonne has been designed and developed in Bangalore. "The missile has a good loitering capability, control and guidance with high degree of accuracy for maximum impact," Saraswat, who is also director-general of DRDO, said. The all-weather cruise missile will be inducted into the Navy, Army and Air Force over the next 12-18 months.
Nirbhay will supplement the Brahmos cruise missile by carrying warheads beyond the 300-km range, as it is capable of flying at different altitudes ranging from 500 metres to 4 kilometres.
Saraswat added that development of Advanced Medium Combat Role Aircraft is in lead phase and after a year, with required clearances, its design and development will be initiated. The aircraft is a single-seat, twin-engine fifth-generation stealth multi-role fighter, which will complement HAL Tejas, Sukhoi/HALs FGFA, Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Dassault Rafale.
